debt ceiling

The debt ceiling is the amount of money the U.S. government is authorized to borrow to meet existing obligations, including payments for Social Security, Medicare, military salaries, interest on the national debt, tax refunds, and more. It does not authorize new spending; rather it allows Treasury to finance commitments that have been made in the past.
